HISTORY
Government College of Art is one of the old
college, It`s named under the Mayo School of Art in 1875, during the British
empire. In 1872 Its palace type building
was adjacent to the Central Museum, Lahore near Anarkali. John Lockwood Kipling
was the founder Principal of this premier Institution. The purpose of the
School was to impart “education in design especially for the development and
improvement of the indigenous arts of the Punjab. At that time this institution
was frequently visited by the elites of the British Government and of the
country.

The School had excellent crafts teachers. Hazi Saheb, Sarder Sunder Singh, Sadhu Singh were the most eminent. After the foundation course students opted for Painting, Clay Modeling, Wood Work, Lacquer Turning, Jewellery Designing and Copper beating. The school had a strong bias in favor of training craftsmen-designers in the fields of traditional Crafts in which painting and clay modeling played a subordinate role.
