SECTOR DESIGNING FACTOR OF CHANDIGARH

The sector constitutes  the 'planning unit ' of Chandigarh . It is  meant to be self - sufficient in meeting the day - to- day needs  of life within easy walking distance which makes each sector comprehensible as a unit . Its dimensions are 1200 meters x 800 meters (3/4×1/2 mile) or 250 acres . Each sector is surrounded by a V2 or V3 . No buildings of a sector open on them .

Access from the surrounding roads is available only at four  controlled points which roughly mark the middle of each side . The road entering a sector from its longer side is called V4 . It is also called the shopping street . It is the principal road of the sector because. everyone comes to it for meeting his/her daily needs of living . It is a mixed traffic road and all traffic is required to move slowly . To shops on this road are located only on its southern side , this prevents frequent crossing of the road while shopping . But  there is another important advantage : the northern side of shop has a covered  public passage which , on account of its orientation , remains in shade . This is a great amenity for shoppers and shopkeepers .  Needless to say that there is ample parking space for all types of vehicles -- cars , scooters , cycles , rickshaws -- and good greenery . while shopping , people can relax and socialise which satisfies an important cultural need of the Indian society .

The other road which enters a sector from its shorter side is called a V5 . It is a ' circulation' road meant to give access to various parts of the sector . On entering it forks in two direction -- east and west -- runs along each quadrant , meet the sector in smilar manner . From the V5 , emerge various V6 which are the roads on which the residences are located .By virtue of this hierarchy of movement , no residential areas remains safe and free from noise pollution

Between the two forks of the  sector . Having a zingzag configuration this space also divided each half of the sector in two parts . Thus , each sector is divided into four parts and identifiable as A , B , C & D corresponding to north , east , south and west sides . The lincear open space contains the educational , health - care and social institutions of the sector . Thus planing a and recreation spaces becomes easily available to them . The meant to rum through   the  open space . This amenity  has not been property developed and has caused great inconvenience to cyclists and pedestrian . This description gives  an idea of functioning and anatomy of a sector . But to get a ' feel ' of the sector it will be worthwhile to take a round trip through a typical one.
