CREATIONS OF CHD

This site for the city was elected in 1948 after careful survey, including aerial reconnaissance. The first master plan was prepared by an American firm Meyer, Whittlesey and glass in Association with young and brilliant architect Mathew Nowicki.
Albert Mayer  had been working India during the Second World War and was known 2 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. His plan also had the sector concept which, in his case, were called superblocks, Each superblock was divided into three parts in which the middle part was devoted to the provision of public amenities like shopping, recreation, education and health care, the capitol Complex was also located at present side, but the architectural treatment of all the building was to be developed by Matthew Nowicki.
Unfortunately, Nowicki ded in a plane crash in 1950. Albert Meyer could not continue after his tragedy. Chief engineer PL Verma and administrator PN Thapar went to Europe to look for a substitute. They finally selected the world famous architect Lee Corbusier to be the author of the master plan and the designer of principal building. The rest of the work was to be carried out by a team of three foregien architect who could be stationed in Chandigarh. They were Maxwell Fry, his wife Jane B,Drew, And Corbusier cousin ,a team  of young Indian architects and planners who worked for them and in course of time gained enough Knowledge and confidence to be able to carry on the work after the departure of the foregien team.Maxwell Fry And Jane Drew worked for about three years and then returned to thair own practice in London.Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier continued till Corbusier died in 1965.About  the same time,Pierre Jeanneret became ill and returned to Switzerland.
