HISTORY OF CHANDIGARH

EARLY HISTORY

The city has a pre-historic past. Due to the presence of a lake, the area has fossil remains with imprints of a large variety of aquatic plants and animals, and amphibian life, which were supported by that environment. As it was a part of the Punjab region, it had many rivers nearby where the ancient and primitive settling of humans began. So, about 8000 years ago, the area was also known to be a home to the Harappans.

MODERN HISTORY

After the loss of Lahore (the capital of Punjab for the partition),the idea of building and New Capital for the Indian part of Punjab took from in 1948. After a lot of dilly dallying as to whether it is worthwhile to build a new Capital to develop a existing City, the decision to build a new capital finally food fight on April 2, 1952, when then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid its Foundation on a sport which is presently in sector 9 the sport is common traits did by commenmorated by a concrete cube which is bears an iron plaque to that effect.

The  First  President  of  India  Dr.  Rajendra  Prasad  formally  declared  the  city open  on  October  7,  1953.  Hurriedly  for  a  while  the  headquarters  of  Government  of  new State  of  East  Punjab  functioned  at  Jalandhar.  Thereafter,  as  make  shift  arrangement,  Shimla became  the  seat  of  the  Government.   However,  that  place  was  not  suitable  for  a  permanent  seat  of  Government.  Its severe  winter  and  none  to  comfortable  approach  from  the  plains  stood  in  the  way  of  making Shimla  permanent  seat  of  the  State  Government.  Several  claims  were  put  and  finally  the present  site  was  chosen  for  the  capital  city  due  to  its  natural  surroundings,  viz.  Patiali  Rao on  the  west,  Sukhna  Choe  on  the  east,  the  Monsoon  Rivers  and  Shivalik  Hills  on  the  northeast  which  make  for  a  check  on  the  haphazard  growth  of  the  city.  Dawn  of  City  Beautiful came  up,  as  surrounding  villages  constituted  into  a  Union  Territory  on  November  1,  1966. The  other  reasons  for  selecting  this  site  were  healthy  climate,  fertile  land  for  growing  trees, fruits  and  vegetables,  plentiful  supply  of  water  and  availability  of  building  materials  like stone,  sand  and  cement  nearby.

Chandigarh has started as a capital of state of Punjab. But history repeated itself in 1966. The truncated State of Punjab underwent a further division on linguistic basis and the new state of Haryana was born.Since both the state climb Chandigarh as its capital, the matter was settled by given the city the status of union territory. It was made the joint capital of both the states.
It was this desired by the  then prime minister India, Indira Gandhi that the matter be settled in about 5 years but events took such a turn that Chandigarh continue to be a union territory. There are no sign get that the question is going to be settled in the near future. In fact the idea has gained ground that the city should continue to remain union territory
indefinitely and be the joint capital of both States.
