In Chandigarh ensures peace and tranquility in the residential areas , reveals its ' urbanity ' in commercial and public areas , and also ensures smooth flow of traffic .
The roads are classified as V1 , V2 , V3 , V4 , V5 , V6 , V7 , & V8 according to their functions . " V" is derived from the French word "via" which means "way" or " path "
V1 roads connect Chandigarh to other cities . Thus , the roads coming from ( or going to) Ambala , Kharar are called V1 s . They have dual carriage - ways , tasteful tree plantation , distinctive lighting , and welcome signs . Even the advertisement panels have a character as and rhythm . It is this that makes the approach to Chandigarh heart warming .
V2 roads are the majer avenues of the city in all its glory . Important commercial . institutional . and bureaucratic functions are located on them so that there is significant built from . They are flanked by parking spaces and service roads that give access to the building located on them . In Chandigarh they are identifiable as 'Margs' Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg are two principal V2s of the city , They merge into V1s leading to kalka and Ambala . Other important V2 are Jan Marg . Himalaya Marg and Utter Marg .
V3 roads are corridor streets for vehicular traffic only . They are well - lighted and landscaped , but no visual features are built on them to distract movement .
V4 , V5 , V6 ,V7 and V8 are the roads within a sector . The V4s generally bisect the sector with shopping and other conveniences located along their along their southern edge . V5s meander through the sector giving access to its inner lanes . V6s come off of the V5s and most residents open onto them . V7s run through the middle of the sectors in the green areas and are intended for pedestrian movement only . And finally the V8s are intended to run parallel with the V7 for the bicycles .
In this way , the elaborate organization of movement in Chandigarh enables the city's residents to choose their preferred means of transport to their needs . This makes the city functional , orderly , and imageable .,

It is definitely a very nice ,well described article.It will be great if u could convey me the RoW (Right of Way) details ie overall width of these 7 types of roads separately &their respective dimensions of metalled portion/lanes &median &footpath widths.The information will be highly useful for BArch students whom I am teaching at MBSSPA,Dwarka ,New Delhi.
