BASIC CONCEPT OF CHD

Chandigarh was conceived as a compact administrative headquarter of the state of Punjab.  It was designed for a population of 500000, and was to be developed in two stages. Unfortunately, Punjab underwent a second division and the new state of Haryana was carved out of in 1966. Chandigarh, situated between the two state is now a union Territory.
The most familiar term in Chandigarh vocabulary is also basic conceptual unit. It is the sector. It is the planning unit, and may be described as an equivalent of the Mohalla or Nagar.I like traditional Mohalla, sector are identified by numbers, not by names. The whole city has been zoned into house the various function of a modern city. These are the commercial zone, administrative zone industrial Zone ,Cultural zone and of course the residential Zone. Sector 1 for instance is the state help headquarter, sector 14 contains the University, Sector 17 is a city centre Or the Downtown, and the Sector 26 is the wholesale market for would like fruits vegetables and grain.

This feature of the concept are now known to all those who live in this city,The important part is that clarity of the concept makes the city easily and accessible for its residence. They unknow instinctively where to find what, for instance, every child knows where the shop are, where the traffics excessive and care is needed while moving or crossing. This imparts to the city  A certain orderliness and grace.
